For those of you who do not know, I'm a wheelchair fencer. Recently I came up with this mask design based around @capricorn-0mnikorn's 2021 Disabilities Pride Flag and the Modified International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA). I sent the design off to USA Fencing for approval a couple days ago, so we should know within the next few weeks if it has been approved or not. I really hope it does get approved because I'm really proud with how it turned out, and if it does I hope to see plenty of other disabled fencers wearing it on their masks!

In July 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed by President George H.W. Bush. This landmark legislation is the reason we celebrate this in July.

The Disability Pride Flag, created by Ann Magill and later revised with community input in 2021, symbolizes and includes the following:

• "Red - physical disabilities

• Gold - neurodiversity

• White - invisible disabilities and disabilities that haven't yet been diagnosed

• Blue - emotional and psychiatric disabilities, including mental illness, anxiety, and depression

• Green - for sensory disabilities, deafness, blindness, lack of smell, lack of taste, audio processing disorder, and all other sensory disabilities

• Gray - mourning and rage for victims of ableist violence and abuse

The diagonal band cuts across the walls and barriers that separate the disabled from normate society, also representing light and creativity cutting through the darkness."

BLOBFISH: a disabled woman who presents themself in a feminine manner/fashion yet feels disconnected from traditional femininity due to being disabled

AXOLOTL: a disabled man who presents themself in a masculine manner/fashion yet feels disconnected from traditional masculinity due to being disabled

NOTE: these terms were made specifically with autistic individuals in mind, but if you know anything about me, then you know that i’m not one for gatekeeping. if this term resonates with you, go right ahead and use it <3

i’ve always felt a bit disconnected from other women, and i think it’s partially due to my autism. growing up, i was comforted by “ugly” animals like blobfish and axolotls, and i know many other neurodivergent folks felt the same way. i hope these terms bring comfort to those who need it <3
